Each year no more than 2.5 percent of Colorado lawyers are selected as 鈥淐olorado Super Lawyers Rising Stars.鈥 This year听Ryan Kalamaya听(Law鈥07) was honored with this award. Ryan works at the firm Reynolds, Kalamaya & Voboril in Eagle County. He is the only attorney in the central Rocky Mountains named to the list in the family law category.

Door to Door Organics, an online grocer, partners with local farmers and artisan producers to deliver organic produce and natural groceries in Colorado and nine additional states. President and CEO听Chad Arnold听(MBA鈥07) has done such a good job that his company, which is based in Louisville, Colo., won Naturally Boulder鈥檚 鈥淐ompany of the Year鈥 award and received a $3.25 million Series A round investment from Greenmont Capital in 2012. Chad lives in Boulder.

Granted, it鈥檚 not exactly avalanche season but that doesn鈥檛 mean that听Scott Havens听(Engr鈥07) isn鈥檛 busy. With a team of five graduate students at Boise State University, he studies avalanches with the help of sound waves and hopes to create a real-time avalanche monitoring system. To get there, the quintet strives to build and implement infrasound 鈥 the sound below the threshold of human hearing in the 1-20 Hz range 鈥 microphones to track the avalanches. The relatively cheap devices also are used to measure volcano eruptions and tornadoes.

Two CU alums bring some laughter to Chicago!听Jessica Stegner听(Thtr鈥07) and听Yvette Rebik听(Jour鈥06) joined the improvisational comedy organization ComedySportz in Chicago earlier this year. Jessica performs long-form improvisation and sketch comedy, something that Yvette has also been doing for the past eight years. Yvette is part of various independent improvisation teams but says performing at ComedySportz Chicago has always been her dream.

Last year听Matt Dority听(Econ, Fin鈥07) joined听Hunter Manchak听(Econ, Engl, Jour鈥05) and听Marcus Choi听(MechEngr鈥05) in running the 2013 Arizona Tough Mudder, a 10-12 mile-long military-style obstacle course. The event has raised more than $5 million for the Wounded Warrior Project. The three Buffs volunteered to be in a photo shoot for General Mills as part of the Tough Mudder sponsorship with Wheaties cereal. Their photo was chosen, and the three appeared on a few million Wheaties boxes.

While pursuing her doctorate degree in ovarian cancer research,听Melissa Price听(MCDBio鈥07) has been working with a large consortium that is trying to identify genetic risk factors across multiple cancer types and the underlying biology of these factors that contribute to disease. For her project Melissa is performing the functional follow-up on one of these factors to see how the genetic variation affects the cellular process in order to understand how ovarian cancer arises in certain individuals. On another note Melissa and her husband听Charles Buckley听(EPOBio鈥07) had a baby girl, Clara Buckley, Sept. 26, 2013. The family attended the CU-Boulder MAVEN mission to Mars weekend festivities in Cocoa Beach, Fla., in November. They live in Wesley Chapel, Fla.

Assistant professor of chemical and biological engineering听Jason Bara听(PhDChemEngr鈥07) developed a carbon-capture process using imidazole solvents. This process is licensed by ION Engineering in Boulder. He lives in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and teaches at the University of Alabama.

Osteopathic medical student听Amber Hull听(IntPhys鈥07) was elected to the American Osteopathic Association鈥檚 Board of Trustees as the student representative and will serve as chair of the Council of Student Affairs. Amber studies at the Midwestern University/Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine. She plans to practice obstetrics and gynecology.

As a CU freshman in 1989-90听Dave Upthegrove听(EnvCon鈥07) was appointed to the board of the CU Environmental Center. He writes this helped spark his interest in environmental issues. Today he is a member of the Washington state legislature serving as chairman of the House environment committee. He lives in Des Moines, Wash.

Since graduating, musician听Ryan Bloom听(Mus鈥07) played the drums on an album for Candlelight Records and moved to Bellingham, Wash., where he works as a drum teacher. He used both of these experiences and his CU education to write a book,听Double Bass Drumming Explained: A Comprehensive Reference on the Art and Science of Double Bass.听The book was self-published in May 2012 and can be found at .

The book chronicles the Latin American experience in the U.S. It was published in 12 countries and was ranked second best-seller, nonfiction book by Amazon in 2012. Aileen lives in El Paso, Texas, where she is an assistant professor and director of Brazilian studies at the University of Texas at El Paso.

CU couple听Keziah Swales听(Fin鈥07) and听Karl Wonstolen听(Fin鈥07) married in August in Boulder. They met in 2004 at the Leeds School of Business. Keziah is a consultant at Accenture and Karl is an analyst at Fisher Investments. They live and work in San Francisco.

After more than five years of work, Arvada, Colo., resident听Beau Beckley听(Mgmt鈥07) published his first book听Make Moves 鈥 Success Through Motion听(Beckley Books). The book is a recording of Beau鈥檚 life journey as well as his observations on life. He has consolidated and documented 27 years of life lessons into seven values.听Beau is one of the founding members of the university鈥檚 Colorado Creed, a code of values for students to follow.

After graduating听Andrew Dunkle听(Art鈥07) taught English for a year in Taiwan and lived there for an additional year during which he co-founded , a website for studying, teaching, volunteering and interning abroad. Along with a few other Forever Buffs听Kate Schlag听(Mktg鈥07) works for Clean Energy Fuels, the largest provider of natural gas as a transportation fuel in North America. The company is building America鈥檚 Natural Gas Highway, a $450 million dollar investment to move goods across the major trucking corridors in America. Kate lives in Newport Beach, Calif.

Last summer听H茅l猫ne Tournier听(Mktg鈥07) received the 1er Prix Or, Grand Prix V.I.E Afrique Australe 2012 award. She is part of VIE (International Business Volunteer), a government program that helps young European professionals find work for French companies overseas for six-to-24 month periods. The award promotes the expertise of young international volunteers and rewards their professional expertise and personal efforts.

In March听Carey Kohout听(Bus, Econ鈥07) traveled to Reykjavik, Iceland, to explore and learn about Nordic culture. She writes that on her trip she gained a better understanding of how the country is working to recover from the Icelandic financial crisis of 2008. Carey also visited the Blue Lagoon natural hot spring, the Gullfoss waterfall in Hv铆t谩 canyon and the geysers of Haukadalur. She lives in Greeley, Colo.

Megan is pursuing a master鈥檚 degree in education psychology at CU and is a graduate admissions coordinator at the Metropolitan State College of Denver.
