Prof. Jack Burns is a Professor in the Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences at the University of Colorado in Boulder. He is also Vice President Emeritus for Academic Affairs and Research for the CU System. Prof. Burns has 345 publications in refereed journals, books, and in conference proceedings and abstracts (as listed in NASA’s Astrophysics Data System). His research has been featured in articles and on the covers of Scientific American, Nature, and Science. His teaching and research focus on extragalactic astronomy and cosmology, supercomputer numerical simulations, astrophysics from the Moon, and public policy issues in higher education and science. Burns is director of the Lunar University Network for Astrophysics Research (LUNAR), a $6.5 million center recently awarded by the NASA Lunar Science Institute. Burns is an elected Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Listen now.

From Sky & Telescope: A future CubeSat pathfinder is set to explore a unique orbital path that will be used later by humans exploring the Moon.

Last week, NASA awarded a $13.7 million contract to Advanced Space, based in Boulder, Colorado, to develop the Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System Technology Operations and Navigation Experiment (Capstone). The mission consists of a 12U CubeSat the size of a microwave oven, and it could launch in late 2020.

NASA plans to return to the Moon with its Artemis program, sister to the Apollo program of the 1960s and 1970s. As part of this program, NASA is building a Lunar Gateway outpost, which will be placed in a near-rectilinear halo orbit around the Moon.From this unique vantagepoint, the Lunar Gateway will eventually be dispatching crewed missions on expeditions to the lunar polar regions. From the Daily Camera: NASA has announced a dozen science and technology payloads that will be at the core of the nation’s mission to put humans back on the moon by 2024, and two of them are led by investigators based in Boulder, while a third also has local ties.

Artemis is the name given by NASA to the project to fulfill President Donald Trump’s directive that the U.S. achieve a manned landing on the moon by 2024 and a sustainable human presence there by 2028, as part of an effort to develop the science to support putting humans on Mars.

The 12 science investigations picked by NASA to serve as the foundation of Artemis will go to the moon on future flights through NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services project, which will allow rapid acquisition of lunar delivery services for payloads that advance capabilities for science, exploration, or commercial development of the moon, according to the agency. From The New York Times: NASA officials on Monday evening unveiled an updated budget request to Congress, seeking more than $1 billion in additional funding in what they called a down payment to accelerate the return of astronauts to the moon by 2024.

Jim Bridenstine, NASA’s administrator, also said that the mission back to the moon would be called Artemis. In Greek mythology, Artemis is the twin sister of Apollo, whose name was used by NASA for the series of spacecraft that first landed Americans on the moon in 1969.

But the revision is just a request, and Congress must decide whether to back the Trump administration’s plan to race back to the lunar surface. Read more...
