听EDUC 2919: Renewing Democracy in Schools and Communities听

Our听CU undergraduate course is for students who are passionate about youth voice for everyday democracy and social change.听 We study theory to transform ourselves and society and learn with middle and high school youth in Boulder Valley School District who are leading change in their own schools and community.听 Together we work to understand and address complex issues relevant to听youth such as听racism in schools, support for immigrant youth and families, addressing global warming, and access to higher education.听

EDUC 2919 students meet on twice a week on campus (currently virtuall) during Monday and Wednesday for 75听minute seminars and on Fridays students meet off听campus at a local middle听or high school for 90听minutes for a the Public Achievement practicum (occuring virtually due to COVID-19).听 Our course is also open for high school students,听community college students and community memebers to take through our extraordinary enrollment partnership.听听During the weekly seminars, students听consider the relationship听between democracy, education, and social change.听

Our course objectives are:

  1. Theories: Develop understanding of and apply theories of demoracy, education, diversity and social change
  2. Democracy in Action: Observe and practice democracy and leadership through Public Achievement each week;
  3. Public Skills:听 Develop and demonstrate public skills including community based research,听deliberation on complex social issues, public narrative, and project听facilitation.
  4. Power and Identity: Understand听concepts of identity, power, privilege, oppression,听intersectionality and diversity with attiention to听education, institutions, and public work.
  5. Moblize k-12 Students: Support students and PA Teams as they identify a听role and skills and citizens who听address complex social issues in their schools and community

Interested in joining Public Achievement?听 We begin interviewing students in March each year听to join our cohort in the Fall Semester of each academic year.听
