From the beginning of my time at university, I have had a strong desire to be involved with education and foster a valuable skill set. I knew opportunities might be limited, if non-existent, as the number of roles that trust undergraduates to be involved with education are both low and competitive. I am incredibly thankful, therefore, that ASSETT and Students as Partners exist.聽聽
Being a pedagogical consultant offered everything I had been hoping for when I began school. It is a position that takes students seriously, not in spite of their status but because of it. It focuses on the input students can provide in the classroom as a valuable and unique way to lead to better learning environments.聽聽
It should also be said that the program is incredibly flexible in its mentorship. Students are encouraged to pursue their interests and strengths while working with ASSETT. In particular, they are eager to support students who want to research and write.聽聽
The first hand experience provided by being a pedagogical consultant聽 is unmatched. Working one on one with a professor I have gained greater insight into their work and a greater appreciation for the effort poured into every class. It has been inspiring that I have been able to share student concerns and help improve learning material. The dialogue this position creates between students and teachers is invaluable, as it helps both come together as equals and work together to make a better classroom.聽
Overall, this has been an incredibly supportive workplace, one where I feel valued and encouraged to pursue my interests. I have been able to hone my ability to write and research, as well as gain practical experience with pedagogy. SaP has also allowed me to understand the class environment so much better while also feeling heard by faculty. If you are a student invested in pedagogy or your subject, or a teacher looking to create dialogue with your students, I cannot recommend working with ASSETT enough.聽聽
