The Program in Jewish Studies and the 听annually award the Ulrich Goldsmith Memorial Prize,听which rewards academic writing on Jewish culture in German-speaking lands.听The $300听prize is awarded听to听the best paper written by a student (undergraduate or graduate) on a topic pertaining to any aspect of German-Jewish culture in the pre- or post-World War II period.

Faculty from the Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures and the Program in听Jewish Studies will nominate students for the prize for papers written听the previous calendar year. A student听awardee will be announced early April.

About Professor Ulrich "Ulo"听Goldsmith

The prize is named after Professor Ulrich "Ulo"听Goldsmith (1910鈥�2000), professor emeritus of German and Comparative Literature. Professor听Goldsmith was born in Freiburg i. B., Germany, and moved to England in 1932 to study at the London School of Economics. He remained an exile in England after 1933 because of the anti-Semitic legislation passed by the Third Reich.听In 1940 he moved to Canada, classified as a "friendly enemy alien," earning his master鈥檚 in German literature from Toronto University. In 1950 he earned his Ph.D. in German from UC-Berkeley.听Goldsmith began working at CU听Boulder in 1957, where he first chaired the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures and later co-founded and chaired the Program in Comparative Literature. He retired from CU in 1979.听The prize was established in the 2010鈥�2011 academic year to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Professor Goldsmith's birth.
