The top business plans of aspiring student entrepreneurs at the University of Colorado at Boulder will be judged by a panel of local executives April 30 in the spring Business Plan Competition. The spring semester event is the climax of a class taught by Juan Rodriguez, professor of electrical and computer engineering and chairman of Ecrix Corp., and instructor Mike Befeler, a principal and founder of Storage Systems Marketing Inc. Rodriguez is a co-founder of both Storage Technology Corp. and Exabyte Corp.

Partnership Is Key To Success Of New Undergraduate Engineering Facility

The unique partnership involving industry and foundations in CU-Boulder’s new $17 million Integrated Teaching and Learning Laboratory may be a harbinger of similar collaborations around the nation, according to engineering Dean Ross Corotis. “Industry has not traditionally been involved in the educational process of engineers,” said Corotis. “But I think the overwhelming support we have received on this project is a signal the private sector is acknowledging their stake in the quality of engineering education.”

CU-Boulder Hosts National Expert On Campus Substance Abuse

Michael Haines, a national expert on campus substance abuse, will participate in several panels and presentations on the CU-Boulder campus, Friday, April 18. His visit is co-sponsored by CU-Boulder’s “A Matter of Degree” Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Grant, the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity and the Alcohol Education Committee of the campus Housing Department. Haines is coordinator of the Health Enhancement Services at Northern Illinois University. He is noted for his research showing that moderate alcohol consumption is the standard for many college students.

CU-Boulder Terminates Fraternity Lease For Violations

The University of Colorado has terminated a lease agreement with the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity for a house at 1505 University Ave., due to numerous lease violations by the group. The building was offered by the university as temporary housing for the fraternity after the membersÂ’ permanent house burned in September 1996. Original plans called for the fraternity to move out of the temporary quarters in January 1997, when the university was scheduled to begin renovating the space for its Continuing Education program.

CU Wizard Show April 26 To Feature Light

Learning how light is created and destroyed will be the subject of the CU Wizard show titled “Light, Lifesavers and Fireflies” on Saturday, April 26, presented by CU-Boulder chemistry Assistant Professor Kathy Rowlen. “We will explore everything from fireflies to fireworks,” said Rowlen, who will present the show at 9:30 a.m. in room 140 of the Cristol Chemistry and Biochemistry Building next to the University Memorial Center Fountain Court.

CU-Boulder Names Anne Tolbert To Acting Controller Position

Anne Tolbert has been named acting controller at the University of Colorado at Boulder, pending approval by the Board of Regents. Tolbert has worked at CU-Boulder in various capacities since 1981, most recently as manager of plant fund accounting and payroll accounting. Her salary will be $73,000 and she is expected to assume the duties of controller on April 25, if the appointment is approved.

CU-Boulder Science Discovery Hosts Wizard Show and Square Dance

The University of Colorado at BoulderÂ’s Science Discovery program will host a night of family entertainment featuring a CU Wizard Show and a Square Dance Extravaganza from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. April 19 at the First Congregational Church of Boulder. Proceeds from the event will benefit Science Discovery, an outreach program of CU-Boulder that offers science presentations to young people through field trips, workshops, wilderness camps and other programs.
